about

It Is Now Recursive, the Midgetmen's 6th studio (loosely speaking) release and 1st EP, is the result of fits and squirts of creativity (also loosely speaking) beginning in 2017 and ending (mercifully) in 2020. Originally conceived as an experiment in how quickly we could record and release a handful of songs, the EP's 3+ year long gestation answers that question with a resounding shrug. Fortunately, as with the entirety of our band's career, It Is Now Recursive retains our charming wit, affection for distorted guitars, and overriding principles that less is more when it comes to song length, lyrics, and/or seriousness.

WUTW and Don't Like It stem from a brilliant idea that we only use one line of lyrics per song. Do not be fooled: These songs are not spiritual siblings as we don't actually enjoy waking up to do yardwork.

Surf Song also was written during this period, but apparently the memo was not received. That said, Alex is making up for lost time on Surf Song... and who knows what else? There might as well only be a single line of lyrics!

The hidden gem on It Is Now Recursive is the slyly titled Haha Haha. Written by newly affirmed "new guy in the band" Scotty Lemming, Haha Haha makes up for all the words missing the earlier compositions. It's truly a gem and we're appreciative of Scotty's contributions to the band. We've long been a fan of his other musical endeavors, so we're glad he's decided to join us!

Reaper, a cover of the bonus track on an unreleased album by our friend Jason's band Ladue, might be the impetus for this entire EP. Recorded to celebrate the release of Ladue's debut album, neither our cover nor the album has seen the light of day almost 3 years later. This was, among other things, our first foray into synthesizers. We hope we've done Jason and his bandmates justice.

Hockey Fight, clocking in at a little more than a minute long, is a minor anthem about being in the band. Lyrically inspired by a Nextdoor post about having enough friends, it sums up the world's problems: too many people in too few places, too few dogs in too many spaces. Humans to the back, dogs to the front!

And finally, the bookend to the album: an alternate take of WUTW, featuring synths and digital drums. A precursor for what's to come next or just a fantastic fling? No one is quite sure, but we know that we're not giving up on guitars quite yet.

We hope you'll enjoy It Is Now Recursive.
